Supplies Needed

• Small engine (such as a lawnmower or tiller engine — Briggs & Stratton recommended, new or used engines can be used)

• Basic hand tools: socket set, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, adjustable wrench

• Specialty tools (helpful but optional): feeler gauge, torque wrench, flywheel puller

• Cleaning supplies: shop rags, carburetor cleaner, small wire brush

• Safety gear: safety glasses, work gloves, closed-toe shoes

Q: What kind of engine do we need?
A: Any small engine will work! A simple push lawnmower engine (Briggs & Stratton recommended) is easiest to find, but you can also use engines from tillers, snow blowers, or similar equipment. In the videos we use a Predator 6.5 HP (212cc) OHV Horizontal-Shaft Gas Engine, which can be found at several stores like Harbor Freight or on Amazon! 

Q: Do we need special tools?
A: Most lessons only require basic hand tools like wrenches, sockets, and screwdrivers. A few optional specialty tools (like a torque wrench or feeler gauge) can be helpful but aren’t required.

Q: What if we can’t find an engine?
A: While hands-on learning is best, students can still learn a lot from the guided notes, diagrams, videos, and activities included in the workbook.

Q: How long does the course take?
A: This is a half-credit, one-semester course. Most families complete it in 16–18 weeks, but you can adjust the pace to fit your schedule.

Q: What age level is this course for?
A: The course is designed for ages 12+. It’s ideal for middle school, high school, and even adults who want an introduction to engines.

Q: Is this course self-paced?
A: Yes! Your student can work through the lessons at their own speed, making it easy to fit into your homeschool schedule.

Q: Can this count as a high school elective?
A: Yes. This course is designed as a 0.5 credit elective for high school transcripts.
